Oahu Volunteering

BETTER THE 'AINA, FROM MAUKA TO MAKAI

There are many volunteer opportunities to take part in while on island that will help restore and beautify this special island. Below are just a few of my favorites and some that I have taken part in myself. From beach cleanups, to fish pond restoration, to humane society assistance, find your passion for bettering the community.

Beach Cleanups

"808 Cleanups is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit organization committed to restoring Hawaiʻi’s natural beauty by empowering volunteers to conduct decentralized cleanups from Mauka to Makai, responding to littering and vandalism of Hawaiʻi’s natural spaces, saving Hawaiʻi’s indigenous ecosystem through education, and building sustainable solutions with community partners."

"Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii is a grassroots, local nonprofit organization run by a small team of dedicated staff and supported by passionate volunteers, just like you. We inspire local communities to care for their coastlines through fun, hands-on beach cleanups. We also coordinate educational programs, team building corporate cleanups, waste diversion services, public awareness campaigns and help others run their own beach cleanups."

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii is an incredible organization! Fellow Nebraskan and MotherNatch proponent @pattiegonia partnered with @rei and came down to show their support and use their platform to raise awareness of the plastic pollution going on in Oahu. SCH provides the gloves, collection bags and sand sifters... you just have to show up :) Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a protective hat and a reusable water bottle. I still got sunburnt this day!

"The Surfrider Foundation mission is to protect and enjoy our ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.

The Oahu Chapter is one of 85 Chapters Nationwide and there are also over 100 high school and college clubs in the national network, with 6 of those being on Oahu. We are ocean lovers who have fun making positive changes in the community and who love protecting our ocean."

"A foundation and support platform for collaborative pelagic research, conservation, education and getting you in the water with marine animals on our daily pelagic shark tours. Our shark dive efforts are focused on studying behavior, physiology, biology and human interaction and effects on sharks, sea turtles and whales. Our dedicated team of marine biologists are passionate about helping people better understand these animals and the negative misconceptions that can go along with them!

Come join us on one of our pelagic dives and world renowned shark tours on the beautiful North Shore of O’ahu and experience for yourself how incredible each species is! You will walk away with a new understanding and appreciation for these animals and hopefully will help spread the word to help save our pelagic animals!"

 - Juan and Ocean Ramsey are an incredibly kind and talented couple. They are both shark advocates and also organize a monthly beach cleanup on different beaches of the island. They have a free-dive with sharks boat charter out of Haleiwa on the North Shore, I haven't gone yet but I want to!!
