Oahu Waterfalls

WORTH CHASING

Always check the weather forecast when planning a waterfall hike. Most waterfalls become treacherous rivers of mud and debris during times of heavy rainfall. Never drink water from any of the falls in Hawai'i or swim with open wounds, most carry a parasite called Leptospirosis that can give you flu-like symptoms for up to two weeks. Wear comfortable, waterproof hiking shoes depending on the trail length and I usually also bring along some bug spray. Some trails have recently closed, for repairs or otherwise. Check with DNLR for updates on which ones are open, and if alternate routes are available. AllTrails is a great app to follow routes to my favorite falls.

Maunawili Falls

The popular Maunawili Falls Trail will be temporarily closed beginning next week on July 15, 2021. The closure is expected to be for two years and includes the trailhead near the Maunawili Estates subdivision. Access to Maunawili Falls is still available to the public. Visitors can instead hike to the falls using the Maunawili Trail, also known as the Maunawili Demonstration Trail. However, parking is not available and hikers must be dropped off, DLNR said.

Waimea Falls

These falls take about 20-30 min to reach after passing through a botanical garden in the heart of Waimea Valley.

There is a good-sized swimming hole at the base of the falls, but you are required to wear a lifejacket to enter, no matter how strong a swimmer you may be. There is a lifeguard on duty to enforce this. Please see their site for admission fees. This is a nice, scenic hike that is enjoyable for the whole family and people of all ages. The park is very accessible and there is usually plenty of parking throughout the day.

Waimano Falls

I always underestimate the cardio output of this hike, I wouldn't say it's extreme but there is all lot of up and down to get there and come back. The trail head starts at the top of Palisades neighborhood in Pearl City. Be mindful of parking as it is all residential. Make sure to pick up your trash. The start of the hike goes back and forth from a dirt path to lightly paved before diving into the forest. The falls are most enjoyable after a good rainfall, otherwise they are sometimes pretty bare. Bring lots of water and bugspray! Plenty of strawberry guava to enjoy on your hike there.

Manoa Falls

This 150ft waterfall sits nestled in the forest at the end of a beautiful and easy trail through the forest, just past a botanical garden above Manoa. This is a family friendly hike that is pretty easy for kids and older folks. Sometimes the water is pumping with a nice swimming hole at the bottom, and other days there is barely a trickle down to a stinky, small body of water at the base. Use your best judgement if you want to hop in, and watch for falling rocks from above!

Kalihi Ice Ponds

The public is reminded that Naohia Falls (Kalihi Ice Ponds) is located in a watershed area managed by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS). Contrary to posts found on social media, blogs, and various websites (hiking, travel, local activities, lifestyle, health and wellness, and general interest), Kalihi Ice Ponds (Naohia Falls) is not a hiking trail and road is closed and not accessible. There is no legal access. Source: https://www.boardofwatersupply.com

Sacred Falls

Sacred Falls State Park is a closed state park located in Hauʻula on the North Shore of the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu. It has been closed since the rockfall that occurred on Mother's Day in 1999. Some call this the most beautiful waterfall on Oahu, I have not had the pleasure of seeing it. It is considered "Kapu". A landslide back in '99 resulted in the trails' closure but it is still frequented to this day. From what I hear, only go with people familiar with the area and if you have been invited. Don't take this hike lightly, many people have to be rescued.
